What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping therapy uses negative pressure — created by suction cups placed on the skin — to lift and separate layers of soft tissue. Unlike traditional massage that compresses tissue, cupping decompresses it, creating space that promotes blood flow, reduces fascial tension, and accelerates healing in restricted areas.

At Ageless Athlete Physical Therapy, cupping is never a standalone treatment. It is used strategically as part of your overall plan — alongside manual therapy, dry needling, and exercise programming — to address specific tissue restrictions that are limiting your recovery or performance.

Types of Cupping We Use

Static Cupping

Cups are placed on specific areas of restriction and held in position. This technique is effective for targeting localized areas of muscle tightness, scar tissue, and fascial adhesions.

Active Cupping

Cups are applied while the patient actively moves through a range of motion. This dynamic technique is particularly effective for improving functional mobility and addressing restrictions that limit sport-specific movement patterns.

Gliding Cupping

Cups are moved across the skin to provide a broader treatment effect across larger muscle groups. Commonly used on the back, IT band, hamstrings, and calves to reduce widespread tension and improve circulation.

What Cupping Therapy Treats

Muscle Tightness & Restricted Mobility

Cupping is highly effective at releasing chronically tight muscles and fascial restrictions that limit range of motion — particularly in the back, hips, shoulders, and legs.

IT Band & Hip Tightness

Runners and cyclists with persistent IT band tightness often respond exceptionally well to cupping along the lateral thigh, providing relief that stretching and foam rolling alone cannot achieve.

Upper Back & Shoulder Tension

Desk workers, overhead athletes, and anyone with chronic upper back tension benefit from cupping to the thoracic spine and periscapular muscles, rapidly reducing tension and improving posture.

Post-Workout Recovery

Active cupping promotes blood flow and reduces delayed onset muscle soreness, making it a valuable tool for athletes with high training volumes who need to recover quickly between sessions.

Scar Tissue & Adhesions

Post-surgical scar tissue and soft tissue adhesions respond well to cupping, which helps mobilize restricted tissue and improve the quality and extensibility of healing structures.

Low Back Pain

Paraspinal muscle tension is a major contributor to low back pain. Cupping the lumbar musculature reduces compression and improves local circulation, providing meaningful relief as part of a comprehensive back pain treatment plan.

What to Expect

Cupping causes temporary skin discoloration — circular marks ranging from pink to dark red — due to the suction drawing blood to the surface. This is not bruising and typically fades within 3-7 days. The marks are a normal response and are not painful.

During treatment you may feel a pulling sensation and pressure. Most patients find cupping comfortable and relaxing. Results are often felt immediately, with further improvement over the following 24-48 hours.

We serve patients throughout Mooresville, Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, and the greater Lake Norman area from two convenient locations.
